Pattern No. 22 — The Intellectual Vampire

He Challenged Everything You Thought.
Left You With Nothing of Your Own.

He was the most stimulating person you'd ever met. Every conversation felt like a door opening. He questioned things other people accepted, held opinions most people wouldn't voice, and pushed back on every idea you brought — not to hurt you, but because he found the friction interesting. You started to feel sharper around him. You started to feel less sure of yourself.

The distinction between someone who expands your thinking and someone who colonises it is not always visible at first. Both feel like intensity. Both feel like engagement. The difference is in what remains when the conversation ends.

Intellectual connection should add to your sense of yourself, not subtract from it. If you leave every conversation feeling smaller, less certain, less anchored — that isn't stimulation. That's depletion dressed in interesting language.

The Intellectual Vampire doesn't necessarily know what he's doing. He may genuinely believe he's helping you think better. But the effect is the same: over time, your opinions feel unreliable unless he's confirmed them. Your ideas feel half-formed unless he's finished them. You start bringing your thoughts to him before you've let yourself have them fully — as if he's the editor and you're always in draft.

I used to have opinions. Strong ones. Somewhere along the way I started running everything through what he would say about it first. I stopped trusting my own read. I kept calling it growth.

You are allowed to be the smartest person in your own mind. You are allowed to think something without defending it first. Someone who consistently makes you feel like your thinking is incomplete without him is not building you up. He's making himself necessary.
